Evacuation Day in Year 5/6

World War 2 Evacuation Day

On Wednesday 7th March all the children in Year 5/6 came in to school dressed as they would have done during the Second World War.
First thing in the morning they had great fun making Carrot Cookies using a wartime recipe.
Later, gas masks in hand, the children lined up in the playground. They were wearing their all important name labels and carrying their ration cards and belongings in suitcases or pillowcases. Weighed down they then walked via the new path to the village hall.
On arrival at the hall the children were met by the Billeting Officer, a severe woman who would stand no nonsense, who soon had them lined up and ready for inspection by the adults (played by members of staff and parent helpers) who had come to choose them to live in their homes. The poor children who were not chosen then had to walk back to school and hope that someone would eventually come forward to look after them.
In the afternoon the children all had to make a sandwich for their tea party. A not very inspiring choice of either jam or margarine (but not both) was all that was on offer and only a thin scraping at that! Along with the sandwiches, the children got to eat the carrot cookies made in the morning. They could also got to sample a vinegar cake, which uses vinegar and bicarbonate of soda instead of eggs. Surprisingly it tasted lovely.
A great day was had by all and everyone had fun experiencing what it would have been like to be evacuated as a child during the war. Even the rain didn’t spoil it!

Learning about Anderson Shelters.

Class 10 measured out the area of an Anderson Shelter and then experienced how cramped it would have been. They then returned to class to try and decide which items they would have taken with them into the shelter to get through a night during The Blitz.
